Actress Anushka Merchande Talks About Her Role in ‘Saru’ and Collaborating with Zee TV Again

Actress Anushka Merchande, who has won hearts with her performances in popular TV shows like Pukaar, Main Hoon Aparajita, and Sasumaa Ne Meri Kadar Na Jani, is all set to appear in Zee TV’s upcoming show Saru. She recently gave an exclusive interview about her role and her experience working with the channel again.

Anushka Merchande Saru: Talks Role & Zee TV Comeback

Anushka Merchande, known for her roles in TV shows like Pukaar, Main Hoon Aparajita, and Sasumaa Ne Meri Kadar Na Jani, is soon going to be seen in Zee TV and Shashi Sumeet Productions’ new show Saru. She will be playing the role of Anika in the show. In a recent exclusive interview with the media, Anushka spoke about her character, her experience, and her thoughts on reuniting with Zee TV. Here’s what she shared:

• Congratulations on Saru! You’ve already grabbed attention with the promo. Tell us something about the show.

Thank you! Saru is the story of a simple village girl who moves to the city to chase her dreams. But on that journey, she is challenged by Anika – that’s me. I play a character who becomes an obstacle in Saru’s path. The show is about ambition, struggles, and a clash of egos.

• You’ve portrayed various characters before. But this time you’re playing a negative role. What drew you to this?

I always look for diversity in the characters I choose. I’ve played positive roles, innocent girls, daughters-in-law, and even a clever con girl. But Anika in Saru is entirely different – stylish, rich, headstrong, and self-obsessed. I believe actors should choose roles that push their creative boundaries. Playing a negative character is a new experience for me, and I’m thoroughly enjoying it.

• How has your bonding been with Shagun Pandey and the rest of the cast?

It’s been amazing! Everyone on set is wonderful – Shagun, Saru, my on-screen mother and grandmother, they’re all so supportive. We’ve gradually become like a family. Whether we’re shooting or hanging out off-camera, we have a great time together.

• How do you think this story will connect with the audience?

Saru is someone rooted in her culture and values – and today’s audience easily connects with such characters. On the other hand, Anika is also relatable in her own way. She didn’t turn out this way on purpose – her upbringing made her like this. Her mother and grandmother pampered her so much that she became spoiled. I think even parents will find something to reflect on in this story.

• You’ve worked with Zee TV before. How was it working with them again?

Zee TV has always felt like home to me. I worked with them earlier in Main Hoon Aparajita alongside Shweta Tiwari ji, who is like a mother figure and a close friend to me. Coming back to Zee feels very special – like returning to my family.

• Lastly, what message would you like to give to your fans and viewers?

I want to sincerely thank all my fans for giving me so much love in every show. I hope you will appreciate me as Anika too. Even though the character is negative, it brings a fresh flavor. Please keep showering your love and support on me.

For those unaware, Anushka Merchande plays the role of Anika in Saru – a girl who constantly tries to block Saru’s path due to her own insecurities and desires.

Saru will premiere on May 12, 2025, on Zee TV and will air every day at 7:30 PM.
